Types of Shoulder Replacement

Not every shoulder is the same. Dr. Shah performs all three types of shoulder replacement and selects the most appropriate procedure based on your anatomy, diagnosis, age and activity level.

01
Total Shoulder Replacement

Both the ball (humeral head) and the socket (glenoid) are replaced with implants. This is the most common procedure for severe osteoarthritis with an intact rotator cuff.

Best for: Osteoarthritis
02
Reverse Shoulder Replacement

The ball and socket positions are switched. Designed specifically for patients with rotator cuff tear arthropathy or failed previous replacement — restoring full overhead function.

Best for: Rotator Cuff Arthropathy
03
Hemi (Partial) Replacement

Only the ball (humeral head) is replaced, leaving the natural socket intact. Often used for complex fracture patterns in elderly patients where socket cartilage is still healthy.

Best for: Complex Fractures
When You May Need Replacement

Conditions We Treat

Shoulder replacement is typically considered when pain and disability are severe, and when other treatments have not provided sufficient relief.

Osteoarthritis (Wear & Tear)

The most common reason for shoulder replacement. Cartilage wears down over years, causing bone-on-bone grinding, severe pain and stiffness.

Rotator Cuff Tear Arthropathy

A massive rotator cuff tear that has gone untreated leads to a specific type of arthritis — best treated with a reverse shoulder replacement.

Severe Shoulder Fractures

Complex fractures of the humeral head — especially in elderly patients — cannot always be fixed and are better treated with a replacement.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Inflammatory arthritis can destroy the joint surfaces. Shoulder replacement restores function and significantly reduces pain in these patients.

Avascular Necrosis (AVN)

Loss of blood supply to the humeral head causes the bone to collapse. Replacement is often the only option when the damage is advanced.

Failed Previous Surgery

When a prior shoulder surgery has not succeeded — including failed fixation or worn-out implants — revision replacement may be the answer.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions patients ask most often before deciding on shoulder replacement surgery.

Age alone is not the deciding factor — the severity of your pain, loss of function, and how much it affects your daily life matters more. Modern implants are durable and shoulder replacement is performed in patients in their 40s and 50s when necessary. The decision is always made after a thorough consultation and review of your scans.
Modern shoulder replacements are designed to last 15–20 years or more. The longevity depends on implant quality, surgical technique, your activity level, and your overall health. With proper care and physiotherapy, most patients enjoy many years of pain-free function.
You will typically use a sling for 4–6 weeks after surgery. Physiotherapy begins within the first few days. Most patients can perform daily activities comfortably within 6–8 weeks, and return to full function within 3–6 months. Recovery varies based on which type of replacement was performed and your overall health.
The choice depends entirely on your specific diagnosis. Total replacement works best when the rotator cuff is intact — typically for osteoarthritis. Reverse replacement is preferred when the rotator cuff is torn or absent, as in rotator cuff tear arthropathy. Dr. Shah will recommend the most appropriate option after reviewing your clinical examination and imaging.
The vast majority of patients experience significant improvement in their ability to lift and rotate their arm after recovery. Patients with rotator cuff arthropathy treated with reverse replacement often achieve dramatic improvement in elevation — including full overhead function in many cases.
Replacement is usually considered only after conservative treatments — physiotherapy, injections, medications — have failed to provide adequate relief. During your consultation, Dr. Shah will review your complete history and imaging, and advise honestly whether you truly need surgery or whether non-surgical options are still viable.
Yes. Patients come to Dr. Shah's practice from across Gujarat, from other Indian cities including Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru, and from abroad including NRI patients based in the US, UK and Middle East. If you are travelling from outside Ahmedabad, our team will help coordinate your stay and post-operative care plan.
